Our Executive Team


President

Ducquan McFarlane

Ducquan is a 5th year student at Ontario Tech University double majoring in both Political Science and Criminology. Joining the SLA in 2017 as a General Member, Ducquan worked his way up to eventually becoming the President of the SLA for the 2019-2020 academic year. He currently Interns for Toronto criminal lawyers Steven M. Hinkson and L. Patrick Barry. During his 3rd and 4th year at Ontario Tech U, he worked as an Administrative Assistant for Dr. Barbara Perry who is a leading researcher in the area of hate crime, and is a professor at Ontario Tech U. When Ducquan isn’t in class or is assisting researchers, he volunteers his time at the Good Shepherd Ministries in Toronto where he assists in preparing meals for the homeless. After completing his undergraduate, Ducquan plans on attending Law School.


Financial Officer

Justin Belzner

Justin is in his third year of Commerce, double majoring in Accounting and Finance. Justin is excited to be exploring his interests in law and business in his new position as the Student Law Association’s Financial Officer. Justin has two years of executive experience in other clubs and has also been part of a university case competition team. Previously Justin has worked as a financial analyst within the Finance department at the university but will be taking a position as a Teaching Assistant in the upcoming school year.


Operations Manager

Miguel Ramirez

Miguel is entering his third-year of Ontario Tech University studying Political Science. With a minor in Legal Studies, Miguel joined the Student Law Association to further his interest in legality and current issues. This will be his first year as the Student Law Association’s Operations Manager. Following graduation, Miguel plans to attend law school.


Secretary

Ashley Montgomery

Ashley is entering into her final year at Ontario Tech University, where she is studying Legal Studies, focusing on Alternate Dispute Resolution. She has a background in Paralegal Studies and has gained relevant experience working within law firms focusing varying areas of law, notably: Employment, Human Rights Law, and Landlord Tenant Law. Her primary interest is in Tribunal work and in mediation. Ashley is incredibly excited to be apart of a wonderful team of individuals interested in furthering their legal knowledge while promoting community involvement. Upon graduation, she plans on completing a Masters in Public Policy and strives to attend law school to work in the administrative law sector.


Social Media and Marketing Director

Chelsey McLeish

Chelsey is currently in her third year of Legal Studies at Ontario Tech University, specializing in Human Rights Law. She joined the Student Law Association to further her interests in current political events and legislative changes and brings with her a strong background in marketing and social media advertising. Upon graduation, Chelsey plans studying at a post-graduate level and wants to work with minority groups and disadvantaged youth.

JEO: Public Relations

Katie Bell

Katie is entering into her third year of the Legal Studies Advanced Entry undergraduate degree. Prior to attending Ontario Tech University, she worked full-time as an estate litigation law clerk at a large law firm in Toronto where she will continue to work part-time throughout her studies. It is Katie’s first year becoming involved in the Student Law Association and she looks forward to working with the executive team to offer practical and engaging legal events to Ontario Tech students. She hopes to attend law school upon graduating.


JEO: Operations and Event Planning

Nick Gocool

Entering his third year of Political Science, Nick is completing the Social Justice, Globalization, and Development specialization, completing courses in Criminology and Legal Studies. He joined the Student Law Association with the hopes of assisting students engage with real legal issues that affect us daily. Post-graduation, Nick plans on applying to law schools or begin to work within the government to contribute his skills of political process analysis.


JEO: President’s Executive Assistant

Evan Bates

Evan is a third year Legal Studies student with a concentration in Human Rights law. Evan plans to pursue a career working as an international lawyer with the focus of his work on aiding individuals who have been effected by war, poverty, and violence. Evan joined the Student Law Association to become actively involved in his school community and to help others looking to pursue a career within the legal field.


JEO: Scheduling Coordinator

Nikky Henderson

Yannique (Nikky) Henderson is entering into her 4th year of the Forensic Psychology program. She is excited to enter into a new role with the Student Law Association (SLA) as a Junior Executive Officer, primarily focusing on scheduling and event planning. She is enthusiastic to be a part of the SLA team working towards furthering social justice causes at Ontario Tech University. Upon graduation, she hopes to enter into the Occupational Therapy program with the ultimate goal of being able to support youth with
disabilities. ​
